NFL cuts tracker LIVE as teams trim rosters to 53 before deadline

The 2026 NFL preseason is winding down, and so two is the period during which NFL teams are allowed to carry 90 players on their active rosters.

The NFL’s 53-man roster deadline will take place at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, Aug. 30. That means a total of 1,184 NFL roster spots will evaporate overnight as part of the annual culling of the league’s work force.

Of course, many of the players cut will soon find jobs on practice squads. NFL teams are allowed to sign as many as 17 individuals to their practice squads, provided at least one player is part of the league’s International Player Pathway.

Nonetheless, the decision-makers across the NFL’s 32 clubs will be facing tough roster decisions in the lead-up to Sunday’s deadline. And they will have less time than usual to make them, as the league moved up the 53-man roster deadline by two days from its usual Tuesday date.

Here’s a look at the players released to date as the NFL’s teams slowly but surely begin to trim their rosters.

Steelers vs Bills live updates: TV info, live stream, odds for preseason game

The Pittsburgh Steelers will wrap up their preseason slate Thursday, Aug. 27 with a visit to the Buffalo Bills and their brand new Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y.

The matchup will be a final showcase for young quarterbacks Drew Allar and Will Howard before Aaron Rodgers takes command of the offensive huddle for the regular season. Both are looking to leave lasting positive impressions after excellent outings in the opener against Green Bay Packers, then comparative duds last week against the New York Jets.

Howard threw a pair of interceptions as the starter last time out. The mistakes short-circuited drives that had reached deep into New York territory. Allar, meanwhile, battled receiver drops, penalties and his own indecision en route to a scoreless second half for the offense.

Also of note will be the possible NFL debut of 2026 first-round NFL draft pick Max Iheanachor. The offensive tackle returned to practice this week after missing about half of training camp and all of the preseason to this point because of an arm/shoulder injury.

He’ll look to give a boost to an offensive line that has struggled both with pass protection and run blocking through two games. While it’s unlikely he can win a starting job after missing the amount of time that he has, eyes will be on starters Troy Fautanu and Dylan Cook to see whether they give him any openings.

'Disappointed' Bannigan steps down as Monaghan boss

Gabriel Bannigan has stepped down from his role as Monaghan manager after two years at the helm.

Bannigan initially joined Monaghan as part of Vinny Corey’s management team in 2022 before succeeding Corey as boss in 2024.

Under Bannigan, Monaghan won the Division Two title in 2025 and reached successive All-Ireland quarter-finals where they were knocked out by Donegal and then Louth.

The Farney men were relegated from Division One this year after a tough league campaign in which they failed to pick up a point.

They bounced back well in the Ulster SFC with wins over Cavan and Derry but suffered an extra-time defeat against Armagh in the decider.

“I ma very disappointed to announce that I am stepping down as manager of the Monaghan senior football team,” Bannigan said in a statement.

“When I was appointed two years ago, I accepted the challenge of leading the Monaghan team through an inevitable period of transition and it has been an absolute privilege to do so.

“On taking the role I promised to mould a Monaghan team that would reflect the values I grew up with in Monaghan GAA, honest, humility, hard work and never say die spirit, I think it is fair to say this Monaghan team has delivered on that promise and the culture created provides a very strong platform to build on in the months and years ahead.”

Woman accusing Byron Scott of sexual assault settles with school as trial looms

The woman accusing former Los Angeles Lakers star Byron Scott of sexually assaulting her when she was 15 has settled her claims against Campbell Hall, the prestigious Southern California private school where the alleged incident occurred nearly 40 years ago.

Terms of the settlement are under seal until the completion of the civil lawsuit against Scott, according to a ruling issued in the case last week approving the agreement and obtained by USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday, August 26. The trial is set to begin on Sept. 8 in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

According to court documents previously obtained by USA TODAY Sports, the woman accuses the now 65-year-old Scott of sexual battery and false imprisonment. The original lawsuit was filed in 2022 under the California Child Victim’s Act, which extended the statute of limitations for childhood sexual abuse survivors to file civil claims. Scott sought to keep his name out of the documents and requested to use “John Doe.”

The lawsuit says in 1987 the Lakers were visiting the accuser’s high school, Campbell Hall in the Studio City neighborhood of Los Angeles, where the accuser was taking summer classes, after which she “was sexually assaulted by Byron Scott in a locked janitor’s closet in the high school gymnasium.” The team was at the school filming instructional basketball videos in the gym and met with the parents, students and teachers.

Campbell Hall was also named as a defendant, and the lawsuit accused the institution of negligence for not protecting the accuser. The school previously attempted to remove itself from the litigation, but a judge ruled against its motion in January. The lawsuit demanded a jury trial and $25,000 for damages, payment of attorney fees, and loss of wages to be paid by Scott and the high school.

Notable Campbell Hall alumni include director Paul Thomas Anderson, actresses Dakota and Elle Fanning and NBA players Jrue, Justin and Aaron Holiday.

Scott was 26 years old and married to his first wife, Anita, at the time of the alleged sexual assault. He has since divorced and remarried. Scott played for the Lakers from 1983 to 1993, winning three NBA championships during the “Showtime” era, and finished his career with the team in 1996-97. Scott also spent 15 seasons as an NBA head coach, most recently with the Lakers in 2015-16.

“Our client is devastated by this complaint,” Scott’s attorney Linda Bauermeister said in a statement in May 2025 after the lawsuit was initially filed. “Our client believed the plaintiff to be over 18 and had no idea she would claim otherwise until 35 years later. He respects girls and women, and the claims have blindsided him and his family.”

Joey, Jesse Buss join new Padres ownership group, reportedly strike deal to acquire approximately 5% of club

Joey and Jesse Buss, the youngest sons of former Los Angeles Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss, announced Wednesday that through the investment group they founded, Buss Sports Capital, they have joined the new San Diego Padres ownership group fronted by the husband-wife tandem of José E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones.

Buss Sports Capital, according tomultiple reports, has struck a deal to acquire approximately 5% of the Padres, whose sale to Feliciano and Jones was unanimously approved by MLB owners on Aug. 17.

Feliciano and Jones spearheaded the reported $3.9 billion purchase, which ranks among the most expensive franchise sales in North American sports history. That list is headlined by not one but two sales of the Los Angeles Lakers, whom Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter just agreed to sell to an ownership group led by businessmen Josh Kushner and Bob Iger for a record $12.5 billion.

That’s $2.5 billion more than what Walter paid when he purchased a controlling interest in the Lakers from the Buss family, a transaction that was approved by the NBA’s Board of Governors less than a year ago.

Not long after Walter began his brief Lakers ownership stint, Joey and Jesse Buss were relieved of their front-office duties with the organization. Soon enough came the inception of Buss Sports Capital, which, according to both ESPN and The Athletic, is also pursuing an NBA Europe ownership stake, even after investing in the Padres.

Joey and Jesse Buss announced, per ESPN’s report, that they will serve on the Padres ownership group’s advisory board.

While with the Lakers, Joey Buss served as the franchise’s alternate governor and vice president of research and development. Jesse Buss, meanwhile, occupied the roles of assistant general manager and director of scouting.

“We are honored to join Kwanza and José and have the opportunity to contribute to the future of a team that Jesse and I have loved since we were kids growing up in San Diego,” Joey Buss said in a statement, via ESPN. “Sports have always been a part of our family’s story, and great organizations have a unique ability to bring people together and create a lasting sense of community. Padres fans have built one of the most passionate and loyal communities in all of sports, and we believe there is a tremendous opportunity to deepen that connection in San Diego and around the world.

“The Padres are on the cusp of something special, and through Buss Sports Capital, we look forward to bringing our experience and perspective to the ownership group and doing our part to build on the strong foundation already in place.”

Jesse Buss added in a statement, per ESPN: “Joey and I had the privilege of learning from our father and then spending nearly two decades building our own careers in professional basketball operations. We saw firsthand what it takes to build a championship organization, and throughout our careers have applied those lessons across talent evaluation, roster construction, player development and long-term organizational planning. While every sport is different, we believe the principles behind building sustained success are universal.”

Following the news of Walter’s impending sale of the Lakers to Kushner and Iger, an agreement reportedly concerning only Walter’s shares in the franchise, five Buss siblings — Johnny, Jimmy, Janie, Joey and Jesse — announced their intent to sell the family’s remaining 17.8% ownership stake in the Lakers.

Their sister, Jeanie Buss, whose title of Lakers governor will be jeopardized with that sale, is contesting it through her lawyer.
